Today marks the 36th anniversary of the "big one" K-Mart warehouse fire.
June 21st 1982, a fire breaks out in the K Mart warehouse a 1.2 million sqft building located in falls twp. Seven minutes into the fire, a third alarm was requested as the fire was rapidly growing, and there was a need for manpower and apparatus. The buildings sprinkler and standpipe system did not have FD connections, so there was no way to supplement the existing supression system. The fire reached the 5th alarm in about 20 minutes, bringing in just about every company from lower bucks county. But fire conditions only grew worse, as aerosols, butane and other flammables were continuing to feed the fire. The fire grew so intense that it actually created it's own firestorm and generated winds of up to 80mph, a full orderly retreat was given and crews then went into defensive attack... in all the fire caused an estimated 113 million dollars in damages, the fire was caused by a pierced aerosol can fumes, that were ignited by a spark from a forklift. The building was a total loss, today a new fully up to code, larger K Mart warehouse occupies the same foot print.

I I think every Fire Company in the tri-state area was there at one time during the fire
They needed the HFSS. Although, in those days, it would've been the WFFS.
My Mom and Dad worked there at the time. My Mom still works there today.
My Dad fought that fire.

FDNY Fireboats have all those connections. To bad we weren't closer.
I remember...it was on my birthday..
Spend many hours on a cover at their fire house !
I remember seeing the smoke from Route 1 and couldn't find out what was burning. I just knew it was a big one.
45's crew made the cover of Fire House magazine on your big job.. Just saying...... It's like Woodstock.. Everyone says they were there..
When it got to that point causing its own firestorm even with a water supply that close it's impossible to stop it without letting it burn out.
I lost my lunch in the fridge that day. Still pissed. Right Dan Murter

I used to take off my wedding ring and put it in my locker. Guess what- I lost it to that fire. Never ever forget it.
I think I took more calls out of Trevose Heights Rescue Squads area that day then in since so many ambulances went to it and I stayed on the truck that stayed at 114
